On UK tour from Kerala, India, Autumn 2017 - a breathtaking blend of theatre, dance, drama, spectacle, music and storytelling.


On Saturday, 30 SEPTEMBER 2017 the company return to perform in the beautiful Guildhall in Priory Park, CHICHESTER. In 2015 Kathakali received a warm welcome by the local community of all ages. The audience were captivated as the story unfolded in this ancient intimate theatre - perfect setting to appreciate the intricate facial expressions and emotions.

Time: See the make up being applied and meet the artists 11.30am - 1.00pm

Performance 2.00pm - 3.30pm

The renowned Kala Chethena Kathakali Company, from Kerala, South India,is bringing the ancient art of Kathakali to CHICHESTER during their tour of the UK this autumn and winter. The performance in Chichester will be on 30 September 2017.

Kathakali is the classical dance drama of the state of Kerala and combines storytelling, dance, drama, music, ritual, vibrant costumes and the centuries - old, highly skilled art of make-up called 'chutti'. The chutti is in the Guinness Book of Records as the most three dimensional make up in the world.

The show is presented by world-class Kathakali experts who have undergone years of intense training and performed internationally for decades, The tour focuses on making Kathakali as accessible and enjoyable to as many people as possible including children, families and students.

In this unique tour, which offers a real Kathakali experience, there will be not only spectacular performances of the ancient art of Kathakali but also an opportunity to see first-hand the elaborate pre-show preparation through the 3-dimensional process of chutti [make-up], a viewing of the beautiful costumes and a chance to meet the artists.
