Responding to the Mystery Warrior exhibition, I was commissioned to create an installation concentrating on the ritual of the burial. My focus within the ceremony lay in the ceramic vessels since they were the final objects to be placed next to the Mystery Warrior containing ritual offerings. There is not much written record on the history of Iron age culture, yet it has been made clear that death was not feared by the Celtic tribes. Working with soft sculpture allows a more intimate perspective of not only who this individual was, but enables me to open the conversation about death, free from modern-day taboos that surround the subject. By using bright colours to contrast the subject matter of the burial site itself, my aim for this placement was to remove some of the initial morbidity and invoke a new curiosity for museum visitors; as well as attempt to forge a line of relatability to the past.
