My fascination with the themes of memory and the past, which I have previously explored in my art practice, led me to take part in the Mystery Warrior project. The idea of creating a shield came from my interest in weaponry and battles, but I have developed this theme by relating my piece to the theme of mental health as shields are a sign of protection. I have chosen to write the message 'It's okay to ask for help, no one can win a war alone' due to the fact that mental health is a highly prevalent issue in today's society - a lot of people struggle to seek help and talk about their problems, this is something that I am personally struggling with and am trying to get better at. I want the message to convey that while it can be hard, it is something everyone can do. This also questions the Warrior's state of mind - did he have doubts? Fear? We can never know, but these are features of all human experience so we can assume he might have done. The message also develops the idea that a war cannot be won alone, but only by an army of people supporting each other.
